Captain John Smith Makes Land Fall in Avalon
Visitors were greeted by the site of this historically recreated barge that sailed Maryland’s waters 400 years ago. Known as the Spirit of 1608, the ship was built by the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum as part of the commemorative celebration for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake Trail.

There were plenty of friends on hand helping to bring this Patatpsco past back to life, and as part of needed accommodations, reenactors were provided cabin lodging in the park and meals by the Elkridge Furnace Inn. The discovery barge will continue its travels along the trail before heading home to Virginia later this year.

Patapsco Valley State Park extends along 32 miles of the Patapsco River, encompassing 16,000 acres and five developed recreational areas. Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding trails, nature and history study, as well as picnicking for individuals or large groups in the park's many popular pavilions.
